The Harionago Selvedge is a 14oz Japanese selvedge denim woven at low tension and left unsinged, preserving the loose cotton fibers across its surface. Rather than burning these fibers away to create a cleaner finish, the denim retains a pronounced hairy texture that feels raw, irregular, and untamed.
Low-tension weaving allows the cotton yarns to maintain more of their natural shape instead of being compressed into a perfectly uniform surface. The result is visible variation throughout the weave, with raised fibers and subtle irregularities that become more pronounced through wear.
The indigo warp yarns are rope dyed, repeatedly dipped into indigo and exposed to air between each immersion. The dye remains concentrated around the exterior of the yarn while its core stays lighter, allowing the surface to gradually chip, crease, and fade with wear.
The fabric takes its name from Harionago, a yōkai associated with the Japanese island of Shikoku. Also known as Hari Onna, she appears as a beautiful woman with extraordinarily long hair ending in sharp, hook-like barbs. According to the legend, she wanders roads at night and smiles at passing men. When her smile is returned, her hair lashes outward and ensnares them.
Her name can be translated as “Hook Woman” or “Barbed-Hair Woman.” The loose, thorn-like strands of the unsinged denim provide the material connection: an indigo surface covered in tangled fibers that project from the cloth rather than lying flat.
Canadian artist Jacqui Oakley created the custom artwork used throughout the release, interpreting Harionago’s flowing hair and concealed danger through detailed linework. The illustration is paired with a vegetable-tanned leather patch finished with black foil embossing.
Each pair is cut, sewn, and finished in Canada with antique copper hardware and a button fly.
