The MIJ19 Amaterasu Selvedge takes its name from Amaterasu, the sun goddess of Shinto mythology and the mythical ancestor of the Japanese Imperial Family.
Her name, 天照, reflects both her identity and her role. Ama (天) means “heaven,” while terasu (照) means “to shine” or “to illuminate.” Together, they describe her divine duty to illuminate the heavens and bring light to the world.
Amaterasu is revered as the highest-ranking kami in the Shinto pantheon, standing above the countless deities traditionally described as the “eight million gods.”
This imagery of light, brightness, and warmth became the foundation for our nineteenth Made in Japan denim.
Natural Indigo and Golden Warmth
The MIJ19 is made from 11.5oz Japanese selvedge denim. Its warp yarns are rope dyed with natural indigo, creating a soft, luminous shade of blue.
The rope-dyeing process leaves the core of each warp yarn white, allowing the denim to develop a classic range of blue-to-white fades with wear.
Beneath the indigo warp is a beige weft that gives the reverse side of the fabric a warm, golden tone. Where the warp wears through from abrasion, fraying, or rips, the beige yarns may peek through, creating unexpected flashes of warmth against the fading blue.
At 11.5oz, the denim is light enough for comfortable year-round wear while retaining the texture and character expected from our Made in Japan collection. Its surface is hairy and rough, with the natural irregularity of traditional Japanese denim.
Tempi-Treated in Japan
To preserve the fabric’s texture and unsanforized character, the MIJ19 undergoes a Tempi treatment in Japan.
This process removes the denim’s residual shrinkage while maintaining its hairy surface, rough hand, and structural integrity. It takes the guesswork out of sizing without flattening or over-finishing the fabric, allowing the denim to retain the character associated with its original loomstate form.
Made in Japan Details
The MIJ19 is finished with a beige, light pink, and beige selvedge edge, along with the signature construction details of the Made in Japan collection.
A sheepskin leather patch is embossed with the Flower of Carnage logo. Iron buttons and copper rivets will age alongside the denim, while hidden back-pocket rivets and a peekaboo selvedge coin pocket complete the traditional detailing.
