The Guardian 2 Selvedge is a 14.25oz Japanese selvedge denim developed with an emphasis on strength and long-term durability. The fabric blends cotton with Kevlar®, an aramid fiber developed in 1965 and best known for its exceptional tensile strength, meaning its resistance to tearing and being pulled apart.
An interesting fact about Kevlar® is that its discovery was accidental. It was originally developed while researchers were trying to create a lightweight reinforcement fiber for tires. Instead, they produced a fiber so strong and stable that it went on to be used in body armor, aerospace components, and high-performance industrial applications.
Unlike performance fabrics that abandon traditional denim character, Guardian 2 retains the look, feel, and aging potential of classic selvedge denim while offering significantly higher tear resistance than a 100% cotton equivalent. While the jeans are not bulletproof, the Kevlar® content dramatically improves durability in high-stress situations and repeated wear.
A subtle pale yellow tone is visible in the weft, a natural result of Kevlar®’s inherent fiber color. This understated detail acts as a quiet visual signature of the fabric’s reinforced construction, adding depth without overpowering the indigo surface.
